Tarangire National Park is 2,850 km² of river valley, acacia woodland and baobab hills, two and a half to three hours by road from Arusha. Go in the dry season, June to October. As the country around it dries out, elephants, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest move in to the Tarangire River and the Silale Swamp, and the game viewing gets better as the months go on.

How is Tarangire different from the Serengeti and Ngorongoro?

It's closer, smaller and built around one river. The Serengeti is a long day's drive away and its herds move all year. Tarangire is close to Arusha, and its animals come to it once the surrounding pans dry. TANAPA says the river and seasonal swamps such as Silale hold water later into the year than the land around them. Much of that wildlife also uses community land outside the park: a 2024 study in Scientific Reports found community conservation areas helped keep the ecosystem's migratory zebra and wildebeest numbers stable.

Elephants and baobabs are what most people remember. TANAPA describes elephant families browsing under old baobabs on the river terraces, and dry-season gatherings of elephants along the Tarangire River.

Birders get a long list. TANAPA counts more than 550 species, among them kori bustards, ostriches, yellow-collared lovebirds, hornbills and ashy starlings. Lions, leopards and hyenas hunt the plains, and TANAPA mentions tree-climbing pythons in the riverine thickets.

When is the best time to visit?

June to October. TANAPA describes two rainy seasons: short rains in November and December, and long rains from March to May, with a drier spell in January and February. TANAPA ties the big gatherings to the dry season, when the river and swamps hold water longest. In the rains, expect fewer of them, along with muddy tracks.

The dry months are also the busiest, and TANAPA advises booking well ahead for June to October. The park sits between 900 and 1,250 metres and gets 650 to 700 mm of rain a year.

How do you get there from Arusha?

TANAPA puts the drive at two and a half to three hours on tarmac via Makuyuni and Minjingu, then graded park roads. It names Maweninga and the Sangaiwe/Kwasuyo corridor among the gates, and recommends a 4×4 in the wet season, November to May. Scheduled and charter flights use Kuro airstrip inside the park.

Which park rules affect your visit?

TANAPA asks you to stay on designated tracks and in the vehicle except at designated points. Walks must be led by an authorised ranger, and drones need written permission in advance. Fees depend on whether you're a citizen, resident or non-resident, on your age and on activities such as walking. They change, so we check the current TANAPA schedule when we quote.

How do our trips include Tarangire?

Tarangire is on 12 of our published itineraries. Because it's so close to Arusha, it sits at one end of the trip. On the 11-day Premiere Luxury Safari and the 10-day Active Safari it's the first park, straight from Arusha, with Lake Manyara next. The 11-day Great Migration Safari gives it two nights before Ngorongoro.

More often it's the last stop. The 8-day and 11-day Tanzania Classic trips come down from Ngorongoro for two nights and a full day of game drives, then head back to Arusha for the flight home. Several trips, the 13-day Bush to Beach Safari among them, stop at Mto wa Mbu for a village tour and local lunch on the way in.

Questions about Tarangire National Park

When is the best time to visit Tarangire?

June to October, the dry season. TANAPA describes zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and hartebeest funnelling into the Tarangire River corridor as the pans and waterholes around the park dry out. The rains fall from November to December and March to May, and TANAPA warns of muddy sections then, so we plan wet-season visits with that in mind.

How far is Tarangire from Arusha?

About two and a half to three hours by road, according to TANAPA, on tarmac via Makuyuni and Minjingu and then graded park roads. Scheduled and charter flights also land at Kuro airstrip inside the park. Because it's close, Tarangire is often the first or last park of a northern Tanzania safari.

Can you do a walking safari in Tarangire?

Yes. TANAPA lists guided walking safaris in Tarangire, and every walk has to be accompanied by an authorised ranger. Walking carries its own fee on top of park entry, so tell us early if you want one and we'll add it to the plan. TANAPA also warns that the park's elephants and buffalo are powerful and asks visitors to keep generous distances.

Are there tsetse flies in Tarangire?

Yes, in parts of the park. TANAPA advises keeping windows mostly up when driving slowly through tsetse areas, wearing neutral colours and carrying insect repellent. The flies are a nuisance rather than a reason to skip the park. We plan drives around the river and swamps, where the dry-season game gathers.

How many nights should I spend in Tarangire?

Two nights if it's the last park of your trip, so you get one full day of game drives. That's how our 8-day and 11-day Tanzania Classic itineraries do it. When it's the first park, straight from Arusha, our Premiere Luxury and Active safaris give it a day of game drives before moving on to Lake Manyara.

Is Tarangire worth visiting in the wet season?

It can be, but expect fewer of the big gatherings. TANAPA links those to the dry season, when the river and swamps hold water longest. It recommends a 4×4 from November to May and warns of muddy sections and waterlogged pans. If your dates fall in the rains, we'll talk through whether the time is better spent at Ndutu for the calving.
